Simple list based menu / active menu item

Just a simple question. I've read a few similar threads but was unable to find the answer for the simple list based menu.

It's possible to change the active style/color of a item for the sub menu (via #dhtmlgoodies_listMenu .activeMenuLink). But I'm unsure how to enable this for the original menu items. Can it be done?

I'm definitely not an expert, so a different code would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
