Tab menu with stuck active tab

Hello! I was wondering if you could help me iron out a problem I've been having with the tab menu. I've added a background image for the inactiveMenuItem class; The problem is that the home tab is always showing as the active tab once the selected page is loaded.

On mouseover everything is ok, but the active tab always reverts to the first (home) tab. I tried changing the cookie option, but that was worse because the last selected page's tab always came up, but the content wasn't right.

It also works a bit differently in IE than in Firefox, but this is relatively minor.
