Just thinking through the problem - I assume that the only reason it works for the mouseover is because the mouse is still over the relevant button when the page refreshes - i.e. the problem is with the cookies script
does this add up - and can you shed any light on a solution?

I have now added code to show http_cookie on the website - there appear to be 2 or 3 entries for dhtmlgoodies_tab_menu_tabindex and not always the same.
Any ideas why there are multiple entries being created?

I believe it's because of the path attribute. When path isn't defined as "/", the cookie will be created on the folder you're currently on. The result here is different cookies and most likely conflicts between cookies.
You should use "/" always since you have files located in different folders.
You should also delete your cookies in order to get rid of the old ones.

I have deleted the cookies in my internet explorer and ensured that the path ="/" is included in both the mouseover and click versions of the webpage and it is now working faultlessly - only 1 cookie is created and this is adjusted to the correct value.
Thanks for all your help
