I'm not sure if I understand your question.
Have you tried increasing the width in the initTabs call ?
btw: The content box is .dhtmlgoodies_aTab, so the css should be appended to that element and not .dhtmlgoodies_tabPane.

When I stretched the width of the tabs I stretched them beyond the dimension size of the images, which caused a blank white space. All I needed to do was create and replace the current buttons with wider dimension sized buttons.
Well hopefully this might help someone or maybe not?
