the paneSplitter already has the feature you are requesting, you just have to make sure you specify that the pane can be closed... consider the following as it sets up a center tab that is closable and attaches a callback function to the close event.
var paneCenter = new DHTMLSuite.paneSplitterPaneModel( { position : "center", id:"centerPane",size:150,minSize:100,maxSize:200,callbackOnCloseContent:'callbackOnCloseContent' } );
paneCenter.addContent( new DHTMLSuite.paneSplitterContentModel( { id: 'center',htmlElementId:'center',title:'Center Pane',tabTitle: 'Center',closable:true } ) );
