simple calendar questions (i hope)

I want to use the calendar with some database (or textfile) where i can store some appointments and
1. give a colour to the the dates that are in my database
2. show a pop-up with some information when I point my mouse on such an appointment in the calendar.

I know quite a lot about php and databases, but javascript is new to me.
Could someone please show me where to start and where i have to modify the scripts?
